Earlier this month, we were fusing our local, season produce with Middle Eastern flavours for the community event A Dead Good Day Out 2018. As well as a whole list of themed activities, dead important info, family fun and safe spaces to discuss death, dying and loss, we ran the cafe there (with helping hands!) and served up cooked food, hot drinks and cakes to keep everyone fed and warm. Pictured above is our take on the classic spiced Pumpkin Soup, with homemade Harissa, Sumac Sourdough Croutons, freshly toasted Dukkah, fresh coriander and a dollop of yogurt (dairy free always available). All veggies were supporting Hampshire farms, and all bread locally baked by Hoxton Bakehouse Co.
As well as our seasonal soup we had a Middle Eastern Mezze plate too. This included a Turkish-style roasted squash, traditional Fatoush salad, beetroot & walnut hummus and Kisir (spiced bulgur wheat with pomegranate molasses, fresh veggies and herbs). Despite the cold, rainy weather, this was just as popular as the hot soup – we’d totally ran out by the end of the afternoon :)
We had such a superb time and are so grateful to have had the opportunity to share some of our favourite flavours! Gigantic congratulations to Deb and Chris for their seemingly-undying energy throughout October until November 10th. Thanks so much for organizing such a jam-packed important event. We were way too busy in the kitchen to attend talks/activities but heard such positive things and were very pleased to be part of the ‘dead good’ community vibes – shout out to St Denys Church & Centre for the use of your kitchen too. Thank you to Henry (who cooks with us at farmer’s markets too) for baking delicious vegan and gluten-free cakes that were sold clean out just after lunch – our feedback was to make more next time! Extra special thanks to Mandi for your help with service and to Victoria, Louise & our very good friend Lynne for keeping the cafe running smoothly!
Also Jayne and Caroline for helping lug all out kit back to the van at the end of the day! All extra hands were extremely valuable – we couldn’t have done it without ya
One final note on how nice to finally bring Hampshire Table to Southampton – since April we have been serving street food and running stalls around Hampshire, but this was the first time (of many to come) that we’ve cooked in the city! We are SO looking forward to more events like this and will keep y’all posted when we know our whereabouts!
Till the next time x
